Comm Arts II: Allow me to get all academic for a moment and suggest that we think of the practices Peter Singer describes in chapters two and three of Animal Liberation as examples of what happens when animal treatment meets modernity. Modernity saw the rise of science and industrial capitalism, and thus provided the conditions for animal experimentation and factory farming.
But now we’re leaving modernity behind and entering postmodernity, which I’ll try to explain today in class. Right now all I want to say is that most of Singer’s argument can be seen as a reaction against some of the key values of modernity — most of that argument, but not all of it. He also criticizes Jewish and Muslim dietary laws, which are decidedly premodern, and genetic engineering, which is postmodern (152-157). I bring this up in part because maybe, as we leave modernity behind and our conditions of existence become more and more postmodern, we’ll need a new book that takes on the problems Singer only begins to ponder in Animal Liberation.
Anyway, what do you think about the genetic engineering of nonhuman animals? Is it ethical to use genetic engineering to create an entirely new species of animal? Should it be legal to patent such a creation?

I do not think it is right to use science to start making new species. Just because people are finding ways to do new things, does not mean they should start making animals. Animals as well are humans are very important to life but it is not right to "MAKE" humans with science why should we create animals? Are people planning to create animals so they can feel a little better about eating them???
ok..sorry but I believe that creating another "species"is kinda crap.God put the genes here and the things to make different genes on this earth. As we start to gether speed in creating more species it is not something that we as humans can own. Patenting a living thing is pretty much just like patenting your first born baby, u made it , u gave it genes, but wait isnt that also infinging on human rights? Sorry but created animals deserve the same.
I think that it should defiantly be illegal to make animals for a certain reason such as for harmful experimentation. Those animals should not be given lives so they can be tortured. We don't go around making a new species of human so why make new species of animals? We might as well be doing the same to us because we are animals too.
I strongly disagree with science creating new species of animals or even animals in general. I belive people are getting in over their heads and abusing their knowledge. Creatures should not be scientifically made, but naturally made. If science starts to "make" new species and create animals the resluts may be fatal and devestating. No one knows what can result. Science should limit itself and make some boundaries.
Not to be a conformist or anything but im going to have to agree with most of the comments on this page. Creating a new species just for the fact of basically destroying it or close too just appears pointless. It doesnt matter if it is created or natural, a life is a life no matter what. Just like sunshine said, I definitely agree some boundaries need to be made.
i just dont think it's right to make things that only god can make it not moral to do so and its wrong on our parts. Playng god is not the right thing to do.
i think that the world is to worried about other stuff, when they should be worried about what is going on today.
